San Bruno, CA - City Manager Alex D. McIntyre announced today the selection of Michael Ku as the City’s new fire chief. Ku is a seasoned public safety professional and leader with over twenty years of experience in the City of San Bruno Fire Department.
“I am very excited to have Michael Ku fill this role,” said City Manager McIntyre. “He brings a long history of service with our community, and I am confident in his ability to lead this department effectively.”
Ku, a trained electrical engineer, began his career in the private sector as a test engineer. After working as an emergency medical technician and paramedic with American Medical Response, he joined the San Bruno Fire Department in 2005 as a paramedic firefighter and has since been promoted to Captain, Battalion Chief, and Acting Fire Marshal.
“Being selected as Fire Chief is the greatest honor of my career,” said incoming Fire Chief Michael Ku. “After 21 years, I am deeply thankful and ready to give back to the organization that gave me so much. My focus is simple: develop the next generation of firefighters and leaders to serve the citizens of San Bruno and San Mateo County.”
Ku holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University and a range of certifications reflecting his qualifications as a paramedic, strike team leader, and technology advocate. During his tenure with the San Bruno Fire Department, he has secured multiple grants supporting critical programs and equipment, implemented cost-saving initiatives that have improved fire engine uptime, and overseen the department's compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements.
