Solar installation contractors can now apply for expedited solar permits through the City's Planning and Permitting software, MyGovernmentOnline,  using SolarAPP+ to provide a code-compliance check for the majority of residential roof-mounted photovoltaic systems.  Contractors must register and complete the How to Use SolarAPP+ For Rooftop Solar Projects in order to use SolarAPP+ and apply for an expedited solar permit with the City of San Bruno.

SolarAPP+ also offers scheduled, live video support sessions through Google Meet for customers who need guidance on submitting solar projects via their SolarAPP+ Assist program.

Currently, the City of San Bruno is using SolarAPP+ to perform code-compliance and plan review for residential photovoltaic projects up to 38kW and photovoltaic up to 38kW projects which also include an Energy Storage System (ESS).  Residential photovoltaic systems above 38kW, installations of photovoltaic systems which include an Electric Vehicle Charger, photovoltaic projects on multi-family dwellings and commercial projects are not eligible for an expedited solar permit.  Please apply directly via MyGovernmentOnline for these types of projects or contact the Building Division (email or call 650-616-7074) if you have further questions.

Step for Obtaining an Expedited Solar Permit:

    • Submit your project through the SolarApp+ website
    • Pay the processing fee from SolarApp+. This is separate from the City's photovoltaic permitting fees.

  3. Apply for Permit on the City's MyGovernmentOnline Portal
    • Once you have your approval documents and your SolarApp+ approval number, you can apply for your Permit in San Bruno's MyGovernmentOnline.
    • You must have an account in MyGovernmentOnline in order to apply. For more information about MyGovernmentOnline, and how to create your account, please see our Online Permits page.
    • Complete the Expedited Solar / SolarAPP+ Permit application, and upload the required SolarAPP+ approval documents and approval number when prompted.
    • Permit fees can be paid through MyGovernmentOnline with a credit card at the conclusion of the application process.  Payment can also be made in-person at the Building Counter in City Hall.
    • If the fees are paid online via MyGovernmentOnline, the Permit will be issued online and can be downloaded from your account.
