Climate Action Plan

The City of San Bruno is developing a Climate Action Plan (CAP) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve community resilience to climate hazards. This project will help our community understand how our use of energy and natural resources is contributing to climate change and how climate hazards will affect our community, and what actions we can take to become a more sustainable and resilient city. Community members will be involved in all phases of the project to make sure that the CAP reflects community goals and priorities.

Preparation of the Climate Action Plan will include:

  • Preparation of a comprehensive inventory of current levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their sources.
  • Projection of future GHG emissions and establishment of emissions reduction targets for the years 2030 and 2045.
  • An assessment of how climate change affects San Bruno.
  • Development of strategies and actions that will reduce our GHG emissions and help build a safer community.
  • Create a system for us to track how well we’re doing, and to understand what’s working and what isn’t.
  • Opportunities for community input and engagement at key stages.

The CAP will integrate with other City and regional planning efforts, including updates to San Bruno's Safety, Open Space, and Environmental Justice Elements, to ensure a coordinated approach to climate action and resilience.

California has established statewide goals to reduce GHG emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and achieve net carbon neutrality, or net-zero emissions, by 2045. San Bruno's CAP will establish local targets that meet or exceed these state goals while addressing our community's specific needs and opportunities.

The CAP development includes four phases:

Community members joined us at the Recreation and Aquatics Center to learn about climate change issues affecting the community. Members had the opportunity to provide input on GHG reduction, policy priorities, and how climate change affects their communities.

It's not too late to provide input! Please email staff below to provide input on the PDF climate boards or priorities for your community.

San Bruno Climate Action Plan Community Survey

The City of San Bruno conducted a Climate Action Plan Community Survey from June 16 through August 1 to gather input on climate-related challenges, potential strategies, and community priorities. The 17-question survey, which took approximately 10–15 minutes to complete, was voluntary and anonymous.

To encourage participation, the City promoted the survey through multiple channels, including the City website, social media, email outreach, and in-person community engagement events. Community input from the survey will help shape the Climate Action Plan to reflect San Bruno’s values and address local needs. All responses will be reviewed alongside other public and stakeholder feedback, and a summary of results will be posted on the project website.
